Riomaggiore is the easternmost country of the Cinque Terre. Since 1999, the five countries are part of the Cinque Terre National Park created in order to protect the environmental heritage.
The highway 370 connects Riomaggiore with La Spezia, through panoramic views extremely valuable. The city of La Spezia, one of the widest port of Northern Italy, is also well connected with the Italian motorway network and the national and international railway line. The Riomaggiore railway station is for local and many of the regional trains.
Riomaggiore grew up along the valley of the Rio Maior river and has an urban structure made of tower-houses built along small streets and staircases orthogonal to the main route.
Through the Via dell'Amore (Lovers’ street), Riomaggiore is connected to the village of Manarola. The trail offers beautiful landscapes that inspired painters such as Telemaco Signorini and poets like Eugenio Montale. Manarola is connected with Monterosso (last of the Cinque Terre) by an unforgettable trail accross incomparable landscapes, which are among the most renowned national and international landscapes. The trail touches the remaining Cinque Terre (Manarola, Corniglia and Vernazza). You can also reach walking through several trails, or by car, by bus, by train or by boat, both La Spezia and the Gulf of Poets with its famous pearls: the beautiful village of Portovenere, Le Grazie and Lerici.
During the summer, boat trips connect Riomaggiore with the rest of the Cinque Terre and the Gulf of La Spezia, offering other memorable glimpses of the landscape from the sea.
